How to decorate a Christmas tree, top tips from a celebrity tree stylist.

How to decorate a Christmas tree, top tips from a celebrity tree stylist.

Ever wondered how to decorate a Christmas tree? We are sharing the top insider secrets to achieve the perfect holiday look with celebrity tree stylist Alana from Dancer and Dasher.

1. Theme & Colour scheme planning

How to style the perfect Christmas tree

Any good design needs a good plan and your Christmas tree is no different. Deciding on the look and style of your Christmas tree is the first step in shopping for the right decorations and ensuring your tree & lights will work with your vision.

For example you might want traditional looking ornaments with classic red, green and gold – this will ensure the purple ribbons you saw and thought about buying on a whim don’t end up being a purchase you regret.

2. Choosing the right tree

Regardless of the style you go for one of the most important choices is the type of Christmas tree you choose.  All Christmas trees may seem the same but decorations can sit very differently on them. It is important to consider the look you’re going for and what it will best suit. always consider tree size, width, bristle, colour and texture of the bristle.

For example for our Ice Christmas tree that Alana created she chose a tree with large gaps between the branches and stems that pointed upwards so the decorations would dangle perfectly.

You also want to consider the space and what size and style is going to suit your home, you want to consider what is proportionate to your space. For example you might have high ceilings but limited width so choosing a narrower but higher species of tree might suit your space better than a shorter wider variety.

3. Decoration size

Bauble size is important; play with different sizes and shapes – move away from the same bauble size on repeat, because differing sizes will help draw the eye up the tree and also help to add dimension to your tree.

Oversized baubles also look amazing as a base to your Christmas tree to hide the base before you have gifts to fill the space.

4. Consider texture

Think about different textures in your tree, shiny/matt/glitter/encrusted/clear/fabric.

Complementing textures can add an interest depth to your tree and break up a uniform look of the same decorations on repeat.

5. Tree lights

The colour of your twinkly lightening is critical for completing your tree. The correct light temperature (colour) will make or break your Christmas Tree.

6. Depth and Layers to your tree

One of the biggest mistakes we see being made when decorating your Christmas tree is only hanging decorations on the outer/tips of branches which leads to a very one dimensional, uniform look. Instead consider the different layers to your tree including how you can decorate more internal branches of the tree – ideal for larger ornaments and pops of colour that won’t over-crowd or overpower your tree but instead create perfect harmony throughout your tree and make it look larger!

7. Heirloom pieces

The most important element to your Christmas tree by far is the sentimental value that Christmas heirloom decorations bring. While trending themes and styles are fun, what will never go out of style is having Christmas decorations that always remind of us the most important Christmas memories and people that will live on for generations.

The snowflake design by Calligraphy en Vogue is perfection because no only is it personalised with hand engraving, it also includes a memory card so you can record your Christmas memory so it’s always with your decoration. Because it comes in neutral glass tones it also won’t compete with ever changing theme of your overall Christmas look.
